Siglap Tree Planting Day and Launch of Limau Estate Community Lime Garden

Dear Residents,

The Siglap Tree Planting Day is here again!

Do you know that there is a tree planting season in Singapore? It all started when Mr Lee Kuan Yew first envisioned Singapore as a Garden City of the tropics and as a commitment to this cause, he has planted a tree every year since he launched the campaign in 1963. Former PM Mr Goh Chok Tong and PM Mr Lee Hsien Loong has carried on this tradition.

The first Tree Planting Day started in 1971 and is held every November as part of the Clean and Green Singapore (CGS) campaign.

In our Siglap event, to be held on the 6 November 2010 ( Saturday) at 8 am at Jalan Limau Kasturi, Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, Speaker of Parliament and MP for East Coast GRC (Siglap) will be planting four Salam trees. He will then proceed to Jalan Limau Manis playground to launch the new Community Lime Garden started by the Limau Estate Gardening Club members. Limau Nipis, Limau Kasturi, Limau Bali and limau Purut are the current species planted

See you there!!

Working on the Community Garden

On a very hot Saturday afternoon, a group of keen Limau gardeners met and made their way to a nursery in Ang Mo Kio, well known for its wide selection of plants. Their mission; to buy one of every lime or limau plant species available and turn the Limau Manis Community Garden into a reference garden for lime plants.

As it turns out, they were only 5 types of lime plants at the nursery. Not discouraged, we bought the plants and headed back to the garden. Hard work awaits! Clearing the garden of weeds and preparing the ground took an hour and then we were ready for the next phase.

With tender loving care, we ensured the plants were transplanted properly. And sufficiently watered; not damaged, roots intact. The rest we leave it to mother nature.

We enjoyed the workout, friendship and neighbourliness. All present resolved to meet again at the garden next Sunday 5 September at 6 pm
