MP Walkabout @ Kew

Rise & shine! Today, the LENC members woke up early to embark on the regular MP Walkabout. Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, Speaker of Parliament, MP for East Coast GRC (Siglap) and representatives from Siglap CCC, CCMC, LTA , NEA and NParks, visited the households in the Kew Estate. Though the morning started with a heavy rain, it soon subsided and we could continue with the scheduled activity. It was an excellent opportunity for the residents to meet Mr Abdullah and for Mr Abdullah to know more about the residents and their needs!

Well done everyone!

Hope to see you @ our next MP Walkabout! :)

Buying More Compost!!

It seems like it is never enough; compost , that is! So on the 12 September, the Gardening Club ordered the equivalent of 1500 Kg or 150 bags of the stuff for re-sale to residents. Residents were waiting at two locations for the stuff to be unloaded. They were then committed to some hard work, shoveling the material into bags. All in all, it was a fun morning, a little tiring but satisfying.

Pearl grass

Hello members of LENC gardening club. Prince's nursery is located at Upper Bukit Timah road. To go to their website, click on the title "Pearl grass" above.

This is where some members have bought their Pearl grass. They can be bought at $2.50per square foot. Better to call them first and inform them how much you want so as to give them time to cut the grass in sq. ft block.

Delivery charge is $30 so best to drive over to pick up yourself. Road leading to carpark is just after the Indian temple. Do bring along newspapers to cover your car boot although they do provide canvas to carry the grass.

HOWEVER if any member has any other "lobang" do let all members know.

See before and after pictures below:

Chek Jawa trip

Chek Jawa - Sunday 28 Jun 09

It was a beautiful and sunny Sunday morning when 30 residents gathered at Siglap CC for their trip to Chek Jawa.

After a bus ride, boat ferry and short van shuttle; we arrived at the Chek Jawa information kiosk where we were met by 3 guides from NParks. From there we were split into 3 groups of 10 and each group was guided by one of the knowledgeable guides From flora to fauna and all creatures on land as well as in the sea; participants were enthralled. The highlight of the trip was being able to go down to sandbank for a closer look at the various forms of sea creatures like sea-cucumber, starfish, sea-shells, crabs etc etc.

It was a very educational and well organized trip; thanks to Jake Tan and Emann.

Pictures show participants at the sandbank, old man selling durian and a Tongkat Ali tree.

Bedok Ria in Bloom

Bedok Ria Crescent is now in full bloom. As of today, 9 households have completed planting orchids in front of their houses.

The orchids in full bloom have attracted much attention and residents have noticed drivers slowing down to admire the flowers. Some neighbours have also walked by to take a closer look.

In fact, the beauty of the blooms has also convinced 2 more residents to join in the Orchid project.

Collecting Compost At Hoy Fatt Road

The soil condition at our Community Garden at Jalan Limau Nipis can be improved, to say the least! The ground is hard, and waterlocked and plants are not growing as well as they should.

So it was a great opportunity to purchase compost cheaply when another Gardening Group was ordering the stuff in bulk and we pooled in our order.

Residents went down to Hoy Fatt Road and helped shovel the compost into bags and then carted them back in a rented lorry to the community garden and to other residents who have placed orders with us. It was a fun way to spend the morning!

LENC wins Siglap Bowling Championship - 2009

The annual Siglap Bowling Championship organized by Siglap CCC and Siglap GROs for residents in East Coast GRC and grassroots leaders was held on Sunday 17th May at SAFRA Tampines Orchid bowl. Gracing the occasion was Mr. Abdullah Tarmugi, Speaker of Parliament and MP of East Coast GRC (Siglap)

During this same championship last year, LENC team came in 5th overall.
This year we managed to gather a youthful team to represent LENC; comprising Jonathan Hong (15yrs), Leon Lee (16yrs), Jevin Lu (15yr) and Ng Siang Min (14 yr).
Youthful but certainly not lacking in experience; they did us proud by emerging as the Champions again after we last tasted victory in 2004 and 2005. On top of this, our lady rep Siang Min also won the award for achieving the individual high game of 224 pins.

With this strong team we will certainly look forward to next year’s championship and hope that more residents will also come forth to join us for an afternoon of fun and competition.

CIB - Bedok Ria orchid theme

Residents involved in CIB - Bedok Ria continued in their effort to complete the community project today. Residents made their way to the Orchid nursery to buy the Orchids of their choice. Thereafter since one of the resident already had the fencing done, it was decided that it would be the first household to have the orchids planted to serve as model for others to follow.
It was a hot day but eager residents were all at hand to observe how the orchids were planted and everyone was delighted with the outcome as shown on in the picture.
The rest of the residents involved are all excited and cannot wait for theirs to be completed come this Sunday.

Community in Bloom - Bedok Ria

CIB - Bedok Ria officially commenced today. Contractor engaged by NParks came over to till the soil and removed unsightly plants as well as weeds.

As in the picture, poor quality soil were removed and new top soil were added to assist residents in growing their plants.

For those residents who have opted to grow orchids, plans are already in motion to select hardy and long lasting orchids to be planted in the designated spots.

Once all the orchids have been bought by the residents, the planting phase will commence.

The Gardening Club Meets Again!

If you want to get to know your neighbours better, nothing beats being a member of the Limau Estate Gardening Club!

On the 18 April, garden enthusiasts from the Limau vicinity gathered at one of the resident's house to discuss gardening issues. So it was decided that the next road to go " Community in Bloom" would be Bedok Ria Crescent!

With help from Ms Eleanor Soh, (left, in green dress) Manager-Community in Bloom, Streetscape Division, National Parks Board, we are confident the street will be transformed.

Ms Eleanor also gave an interesting talk on "Plant diseases" and this was followed by a sumptuous high tea of Mee Soto and Durian green bean dessert prepared by our super host Ms Sapinah

The next meeting will be held on 13 June 2009.
If you are interested to attend, do call 65320443
Membership to the Gardening Club is free.
